True repentance is a transformative change of heart…
The human brain can be complex but some aspects are universal. It is very difficult to stop doing something when you are focused solely on the thing you are not supposed to do. Most of us have learned that behavior can be changed by either substitution or turning toward what your goal is in the positive form.
Simply as with dieting...for results we don’t focus on what we can’t have but focus on the good things you can have in order to have more peace and success in achieving a healthy diet. Your subconscious brain is objective and holds no discrimination to what you bring to the forefront of your mind. If you focus on what you shouldn’t have or shouldn't be doing then you just programmed the idea of the concept in your subconscious and the cycle continues. More simply stated is if you think about not eating ice cream then all you really do is put ice cream in your brain...and the thought persists.
So rather than have people tell you “repent” ..”turn from your sin”....(this will motivate but its short-lived once the inspiring and moving message has left the scene)...let me tell you a different narrative but one that was intended from the beginning.
Turn toward something and not away…Psalm 121 beckons us to lift UP our eyes to where our help comes from.
Turn toward the LOVE God has for you…
It is the ONLY thing that will provide lasting change and fill the only need in which we were created...to LOVE a God who has perfectly loved us from the beginning.
I promise you this...If you ask Him, He will reveal to you more and more the depths of His heart for you.
For what is loved can grow and we can grow in an atmosphere of love not restraints.
Receive that kind of LOVE from Him, because that is the kind of Love that he has for us and that is the only thing that would cause us to truly repent...and create lasting change in our lives that overflows into the world around us.
